Summer Movie Preview

The sum­mer movie sea­son is a block­buster heavy sea­son that brings in the money at the box office. And look­ing at this year’s sum­mer slate there seems to be no short­age of those types.

The sum­mer movie sea­son offi­cially kicks off in May with some major films being released.

On May 2, The Amaz­ing Spider-Man 2 swings its way into the­aters. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone return to reprise their roles as Peter Parker (Spider-Man) and Gwen Stacy. The film also fea­tures Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, Paul Gia­matti and Dane DeHaan. Marc Webb returns to direct the sequel as well.

On May 9, the com­edy Neigh­bors will hit the­aters as the first R-Rated com­edy of the sum­mer. The film stars Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. It is directed by Nicholas Stoller who also directed past come­dies such as For­get­ting Sarah Mar­shall and Get Him to the Greek.

Two major releases hit the­aters on May 16. The first being Godzilla. The leg­endary mon­ster returns to the big screen and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass) and Bryan Cranston (Break­ing Bad). The sec­ond open­ing that week­end is Mil­lion Dol­lar Arm star­ring Jon Hamm.

The sequel to X-Men: First Class will hit the­aters on May 23. X-Men: Days of Future Past will star James McAvoy, Michael Fass­ben­der, Jen­nifer Lawrence, Hugh Jack­man and Ian McKel­lan and Bryan Singer returns to direct the film.

Disney’s Malef­i­cent opens in May 30. The movie tells the story of one of Disney’s most iconic vil­lains from Sleep­ing Beauty and stars Angelina Jolie in the title role. Also due out May 30 is Fam­ily Guy cre­ator Seth MacFarlane’s fea­ture film fol­low up to 2012’s Ted. The film is titled A Mil­lion Ways to die in the West and stars Mac­Far­lane, Char­l­ize Theron, Amanda Seyfried, Liam Nee­son and Neil Patrick Harris.

Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomor­row opens June 6 fol­lowed by a week­end of sequels with How to Train Your Dragon 2 and 22 Jump Street both open­ing May 13.

Michael Bay’s newest install­ment in the Trans­form­ers series will hit the­aters June 27. The film stars Mark Wahlberg.

On July 11, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens. Dawn is the much antic­i­pated to sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes and will star Gary Oldman.

Matrix cre­ators Andy and Lena Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascend­ing will open in the­aters on July 18. The sci-fi adven­ture film will star Mila Kunis and Chan­ning Tatum. Also open­ing on July 18 is the sequel to The Purge enti­tled The Purge: Anarchy.

Dwayne “The Rock” John­son will bring Her­cules back to the big screen play­ing the title role in Her­cules. The Brett Rat­ner film hits the­aters July 25.

The Mar­vel cin­e­matic uni­verse makes its return to the big screen on August 1 as Guardians of the Galaxy hits the­aters. The film is directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Salanda, Bradley Cooper and John C. Reilly.

Sum­mer winds down with a pair of action adven­ture films. Teenage Mutant Ninja Tur­tles opens August 8 and The Expend­ables 3 opens on August 25.

Movie stu­dios will look to improve upon their num­bers from last sum­mer. Sum­mer box office num­bers in 2013 were up 12.7 per­cent from the year before eclips­ing nearly $4.9 billion.
