Summer Movie Preview

The summer movie season is a blockbuster heavy season that brings in the money at the box office. And looking at this year’s summer slate there seems to be no shortage of those types.

The summer movie season officially kicks off in May with some major films being released.

On May 2, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings its way into theaters. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone return to reprise their roles as Peter Parker (Spider-Man) and Gwen Stacy. The film also features Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, Paul Giamatti and Dane DeHaan. Marc Webb returns to direct the sequel as well.

On May 9, the comedy Neighbors will hit theaters as the first R-Rated comedy of the summer. The film stars Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. It is directed by Nicholas Stoller who also directed past comedies such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek.

Two major releases hit theaters on May 16. The first being Godzilla. The legendary monster returns to the big screen and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad). The second opening that weekend is Million Dollar Arm starring Jon Hamm.

The sequel to X-Men: First Class will hit theaters on May 23. X-Men: Days of Future Past will star James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Hugh Jackman and Ian McKellan and Bryan Singer returns to direct the film.

Disney’s Maleficent opens in May 30. The movie tells the story of one of Disney’s most iconic villains from Sleeping Beauty and stars Angelina Jolie in the title role. Also due out May 30 is Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s feature film follow up to 2012’s Ted. The film is titled A Million Ways to die in the West and stars MacFarlane, Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried, Liam Neeson and Neil Patrick Harris.

Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow opens June 6 followed by a weekend of sequels with How to Train Your Dragon 2 and 22 Jump Street both opening May 13.

Michael Bay’s newest installment in the Transformers series will hit theaters June 27. The film stars Mark Wahlberg.

On July 11, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens. Dawn is the much anticipated to sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes and will star Gary Oldman.

Matrix creators Andy and Lena Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascending will open in theaters on July 18. The sci-fi adventure film will star Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum. Also opening on July 18 is the sequel to The Purge entitled The Purge: Anarchy.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will bring Hercules back to the big screen playing the title role in Hercules. The Brett Ratner film hits theaters July 25.

The Marvel cinematic universe makes its return to the big screen on August 1 as Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters. The film is directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Salanda, Bradley Cooper and John C. Reilly.

Summer winds down with a pair of action adventure films. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens August 8 and The Expendables 3 opens on August 25.

Movie studios will look to improve upon their numbers from last summer. Summer box office numbers in 2013 were up 12.7 percent from the year before eclipsing nearly $4.9 billion.
