Weekend Recap: Yellowjackets Earn WIAC Conference Split versus UW-River Falls

The UW-Superior men’s hockey team earned a split over the week­end with a 2–1 loss and a 2–1 over­time win at Wess­man Arena.

UW River-Falls 2, Yel­low­jack­ets 1

Fri­day night the Yel­low­jack­ets ran into a hot goal­tender. Fal­cons goalie Scott Lewan stopped 38 of 39 Yel­low­jack­ets as the Jack­ets fell 2–1 to open the weekend.

River Falls got the scor­ing started in the first period as Jon Schreiner cashed in a five-on-three pow­er­play oppor­tu­nity to the Fal­cons up 1–0 16:52 into the open­ing frame. Ryan Don­ner and Willie Hess assisted on the goal.

The Yel­low­jack­ets would put up 31 shots over the next two peri­ods but were only able to net one goal. The Fal­cons added one goal in the sec­ond period, an unas­sisted tally by Mitch Kontny to put the Fal­cons up 2–0.

At the 12:09 mark of the third period the Yel­low­jack­ets finally were able to break through on the score­board. Less than thirty sec­onds after UWS defense­man Con­nor Fau­pel went to the box for hold­ing, Michael Rey took a cross ice pass from Pat Dal­bec and fired one home short­handed for the Jack­ets to cut the Fal­con lead in half. Jeff Forsythe also assisted on Rey’s ninth of the year and his third in as many games.

A flurry of great chances came for the Yel­low­jack­ets down the stretch but Lewan was equal to the task. With two sec­onds on the clock River Falls took a face­mask­ing penalty. Cody Hotchkin was able to get a shot on net off the draw but it clanged off the post and sealed a Fal­con victory.

Goalie Drew Strand­berg was handed his sixth loss of the year in an 18 save effort.


Yel­low­jack­ets 2, UW River Falls 1 (OT)

Off the heels of a 2–1 loss the Yel­low­jack­ets came out Sat­ur­day night don­ning orange jersey’s for their annual “Stick it to Can­cer” game. The Jack­ets walked away win­ners with 2–1 over­time win.

After a score­less first period which saw the Yel­low­jack­ets hit three posts, River Falls upped the pres­sure in the sec­ond period but it was the Yel­low­jack­ets who lit the lamp. At the 6:01 mark of the sec­ond Con­nor Fau­pel net­ted his sec­ond goal of the year with an assist from Pat Dal­bec to put UWS up 1–0. Jack­ets goalie Dayn Belfour stood tall stop­ping all 18 shots the Fal­cons pres­sured him with.

The third period it was the oppo­site. It was the Yel­low­jack­ets who led the period with 13 shots to the Fal­cons five. But it was River Falls that picked up the lone goal of the period at the 6:12 mark of the third when Mitch Kontny beat Belfour for his sec­ond goal of the weekend.

As time ticked away, nei­ther team was able to break the tie leav­ing the game unde­cided after three peri­ods. In over­time River Falls picked up three shots while the Jack­ets only needed one. With 14 sec­onds to go, Pat Dal­bec took a pass from Michael Rey and wasted no time blast­ing a one timer past Lewan for the over­time vic­tory. Jeff Forsythe also assisted on the game winner.

Belfour earned the vic­tory with a 32 save per­for­mance, the win was his third of the year. Dalbec’s goal capped a three point week­end for the senior while Rey had a two point week­end with a goal and an assist. Forsythe also col­lected a two point week­end with two assists. Dal­bec, Rey and Forsythe all have points in four con­sec­u­tive games for UWS.

The Jack­ets (7–11-3, 2–4-2 WIAC) will hit the road this week­end trav­el­ing to UW-Eau Claire for a pair of games.
