The UW-Superior men’s hockey team earned a split over the weekend with a 2–1 loss and a 2–1 overtime win at Wessman Arena.
UW River-Falls 2, Yellowjackets 1
Friday night the Yellowjackets ran into a hot goaltender. Falcons goalie Scott Lewan stopped 38 of 39 Yellowjackets as the Jackets fell 2–1 to open the weekend.
River Falls got the scoring started in the first period as Jon Schreiner cashed in a five-on-three powerplay opportunity to the Falcons up 1–0 16:52 into the opening frame. Ryan Donner and Willie Hess assisted on the goal.
The Yellowjackets would put up 31 shots over the next two periods but were only able to net one goal. The Falcons added one goal in the second period, an unassisted tally by Mitch Kontny to put the Falcons up 2–0.
At the 12:09 mark of the third period the Yellowjackets finally were able to break through on the scoreboard. Less than thirty seconds after UWS defenseman Connor Faupel went to the box for holding, Michael Rey took a cross ice pass from Pat Dalbec and fired one home shorthanded for the Jackets to cut the Falcon lead in half. Jeff Forsythe also assisted on Rey’s ninth of the year and his third in as many games.
A flurry of great chances came for the Yellowjackets down the stretch but Lewan was equal to the task. With two seconds on the clock River Falls took a facemasking penalty. Cody Hotchkin was able to get a shot on net off the draw but it clanged off the post and sealed a Falcon victory.
Goalie Drew Strandberg was handed his sixth loss of the year in an 18 save effort.
Yellowjackets 2, UW River Falls 1 (OT)
Off the heels of a 2–1 loss the Yellowjackets came out Saturday night donning orange jersey’s for their annual “Stick it to Cancer” game. The Jackets walked away winners with 2–1 overtime win.
After a scoreless first period which saw the Yellowjackets hit three posts, River Falls upped the pressure in the second period but it was the Yellowjackets who lit the lamp. At the 6:01 mark of the second Connor Faupel netted his second goal of the year with an assist from Pat Dalbec to put UWS up 1–0. Jackets goalie Dayn Belfour stood tall stopping all 18 shots the Falcons pressured him with.
The third period it was the opposite. It was the Yellowjackets who led the period with 13 shots to the Falcons five. But it was River Falls that picked up the lone goal of the period at the 6:12 mark of the third when Mitch Kontny beat Belfour for his second goal of the weekend.
As time ticked away, neither team was able to break the tie leaving the game undecided after three periods. In overtime River Falls picked up three shots while the Jackets only needed one. With 14 seconds to go, Pat Dalbec took a pass from Michael Rey and wasted no time blasting a one timer past Lewan for the overtime victory. Jeff Forsythe also assisted on the game winner.
Belfour earned the victory with a 32 save performance, the win was his third of the year. Dalbec’s goal capped a three point weekend for the senior while Rey had a two point weekend with a goal and an assist. Forsythe also collected a two point weekend with two assists. Dalbec, Rey and Forsythe all have points in four consecutive games for UWS.
The Jackets (7–11-3, 2–4-2 WIAC) will hit the road this weekend traveling to UW-Eau Claire for a pair of games.
