UW-Superior Men’s Soccer head to WIAC Championship

The Yellowjacket’s Men Soccer team made an appearance in their first ever WIAC tournament Wednesday, edging UW-Whitewater 2–1.
Despite the lack of experience the Jackets have playing in the tournament, they came out and proved that they deserve to be there. Junior forward Brian Grand drew first blood in the match, scoring at the 32:21 mark of the first half for his eighth goal of the season. Ben Kasper had the lone assist on the goal. The Jackets used the momentum of the first goal to continue to put pressure on Whitewater and struck again at the 41:19 mark. Trevor Laroche-Theune found Dan Baga near the net, who capitalized on the opportunity and extended the lead to 2–0 with his second goal of the year.
In the second half Whitewater continued to battle and were able to cut the lead in half at the 55 minute mark. However the Jackets held strong and were able to hold Whitewater off leading to the victory. UW-Whitewater outshot the Jackets 8–4, but junior goal keeper Matt Elder was able to fend off seven of the eight shots faced to help the Jackets move on to the WIAC Championship.
The Jackets (11–6-3, 2–1-1 WIAC) will compete for the WIAC Championship at 6 p.m. Friday, at UW-Oshkosh. The Jackets faced UW-Oshkosh in late September this year and it resulted in a 1–1 tie after both teams failed to convert through two overtimes.
