Students to run “Nearly Naked” to Make a “Jacket Racket”

UW-Superior is hosting Jacket Racket the weekend of November 7 through November 9. Among the athletic events taking place during the event are other interesting and possibly controversial goings-on that will certainly get people’s attention. Jacket Racket is a time dedicated to showing pride in UW-Superior traditions and pride in the Black and Yellow.  Student’s will have the opportunity to take part in many of these events with a contest being held for the student who attends the most, filling up a punch card, and winning a chance at tuition. One of the biggest highlights of the weekend-long event is the Nearly Naked Run.

The Nearly Naked Run is open to all UW-Superior students and is free to sign up. The Run itself takes place November 8 and starts in Wessman Arena Students are asked to donate clothing and run a mile through the UWS campus nearly naked. Event organizers say bathing suit areas are to be covered up giving it the name Nearly Naked Mile with an emphasis on the nearly to avoid major controversy. Registration for the event starts at 4 p.m. at Wessman Arena Friday November 8 with the run beginning at 5 p.m. T-shirts will also be available for purchase after the run. The biggest challenge for the runners will be the potential cold temperatures that may occur as they run across the campus. This gives them an added level of success for both supporting the cause and braving the chill of a Wisconsin November.

On Thursday November 7, the Men’s and Women’s basketball teams will be hosting the second annual Jacket Jam in the Mertz Mortorelli Gym at 7 p.m. The event will include skills competitions, scrimmages, three-point shoot-out, and a slam dunk contest.

The athletic theme continues through the weekend as a tailgate will be held on Friday before the men’s hockey season opener against St. Johns. The game faces off at 7 p.m. at Wessman Arena. Following the game, students can take the ice and take part in the late night skate. Rental of skates will available to students for the event.

Finally On Saturday, The Marcovich Wellness Center will celebrate its ten year anniversary with a student pep fest beginning at 5 p.m. in the Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium. Then at 7 p.m., the men’s hockey team will be hosting Concordia College at Wessman arena.

Also that same night in the Yellowjacket Union, the Union Bash will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight. The dance will feature a mechanical bull and other dance competitions. This event is looking to provide a multitude of options for students to enjoy the weekend Jacket Racket and help support UW-Superior and other organizations doing it.
